Benchpad vs WorkFlowy

WorkFlowy is structure all the way down. If building the outline became the work, three flat pads remove the thing you were maintaining.

Benchpad vs WorkFlowy

The problem: The outline became the project

WorkFlowy is built on a single, powerful premise: everything is an infinite outline. You can nest bullets inside bullets forever, zoom into any specific node to make it the temporary "root" of your document, and build structure all the way down.

For some people, this is exactly how their brain works.

But for many others, an infinitely nestable outliner becomes a trap. When you can collapse a thought into a thousand sub-bullets, the tool encourages you to do exactly that. You start organizing your thoughts before you've even finished having them.

The hidden cost of an outliner is the mental friction of deciding where each bullet goes, every single time you want to capture a thought. Over time, structuring the outline becomes the work itself. You spend more time indenting, dragging, and tagging bullets than you do actually writing.

The solution: Three flat documents and zero hierarchy

Benchpad is the opposite bet. It gives you three flat, named pads with absolutely no hierarchy to build or maintain. We built a very sharp, very fast knife.

There are no nested bullets. There are no folders. There is no infinite canvas. You cannot collapse a thought into a thousand sub-trees. Benchpad is for people who watched the tree become the project, and want to go back to just writing.

When you should use WorkFlowy

If hierarchy is your thinking—nested projects, zoomable sub-trees, the same node mirrored in five different places—WorkFlowy is purpose-built and incredibly good at it. Power users run their entire lives out of one WorkFlowy outline, and nothing flat will ever replace that for them.

Benchpad doesn't even try. There is no nesting here at all. If you want to build an infinite taxonomy, use WorkFlowy.

When to switch to Benchpad

Capture lands in seconds — from the menu bar, the browser, or your phoneCapture lands in seconds — from the menu bar, the browser, or your phone

No structure to maintain. The hidden cost of an outliner is deciding where each bullet goes. Three Benchpad pads have nowhere to file, so there is no filing. You just open one and type.

Capture from anywhere. WorkFlowy is primarily a web-first experience. Benchpad offers native iOS and Android apps, Mac and Windows desktop apps, and runs in any browser. The thought is caught quickly, wherever it lands.

Genuinely offline-first. Benchpad is fully usable with no network. If you edit offline on two different devices, the edits are merged conflict-free using Yjs CRDTs. It is fundamentally a local-first application, not an online tool with an offline mode attached to it.

Calm by constraint. There is no infinite canvas. There is no node count. There is no tag taxonomy to invent on Monday and then regret on Friday. The constraint forces you to focus on the text itself.

Two philosophies

WorkFlowy says: give structure no limits, and your mind will follow it.

Benchpad says: remove the structure entirely, and your mind will finally write.

Both philosophies are true of somebody. The question is which one describes your actual experience over the last six months.

Export your WorkFlowy outline, and paste the ten lines you actually reference every day into one Benchpad pad. See whether the other four hundred nested bullets ever actually come up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Benchpad an outliner like WorkFlowy?

No, deliberately. WorkFlowy is built on infinitely nestable bullets you zoom into. Benchpad has no nesting and no document tree: three named pads, each a flowing document with headings. If you want to collapse a thought into a thousand sub-bullets, WorkFlowy is better. If structuring the outline became the work, Benchpad removes it.

Can I move from WorkFlowy to Benchpad?

Export your WorkFlowy outline as plain text or OPML and paste what matters into a pad. There's no nested-bullet import, on purpose — most people find the move is a chance to drop the scaffolding and keep the few lines they actually use.
