Benchpad vs FSNotes
FSNotes is a file-based Markdown notes manager for Mac. Benchpad is a zero-setup, offline-first 3-scratchpad app for instant capture on any device.

The problem: The burden of managing local files
FSNotes is an excellent, open-source macOS and iOS app designed for managing a directory of plain-text Markdown files.
For developers and writers who want to store thousands of separate .md files directly on their hard drive, it is a very capable tool.
But managing raw files on disk comes with a hidden tax. Every time you want to quickly jot down a phone number, a CLI command, or a meeting note, you are forced to make filing decisions. You have to create a new .md file. You have to give that file a title that makes sense. You have to decide which folder or sub-directory that file belongs in.
If you use iCloud to sync those files between your Mac and your iPhone, you are at the mercy of iCloud's infamous last-write-wins conflict resolution. If you edit a file on two devices while offline, one of those edits will likely be silently overwritten and destroyed when you reconnect.
And finally, because it is an Apple-native file manager, it completely locks you out if you ever need to use a Windows PC.
The solution: A violently simple, zero-setup scratchpad
Benchpad takes the opposite approach. Instead of managing thousands of files, it gives you exactly three fixed scratchpads. We built a very sharp, very fast knife.
There is no folder overhead. There are no tags. When you open the app, you are instantly looking at your text. You don't have to name a file before you can start writing.

When you should use FSNotes
If your primary goal is to maintain a massive Zettelkasten knowledge base, or if you strictly demand that every note exists as an individual .md file on your local hard drive so you can manipulate them with external terminal scripts, FSNotes is the better tool.
When to switch to Benchpad
Zero filing lag. If you spend more time creating folders and agonizing over .md file naming conventions than you do actually writing, Benchpad eliminates that decision fatigue entirely. You just open one of your three pads and get back to work.
Bulletproof offline sync. Benchpad doesn't rely on iCloud to sync flat files. It uses a local-first Yjs CRDT update log. If you edit a pad on your Windows laptop while offline, and edit the exact same pad on your iPhone, Benchpad merges those edits perfectly at the character level when you reconnect. No data is lost.
Cross-platform freedom. Benchpad treats Windows, Linux, and Android as first-class citizens. Your notes are available instantly, anywhere.
