A menu bar & system tray notes app with a global hotkey
Capture has to be faster than forgetting. One global hotkey drops a pad over whatever app you're in, and takes it away again.

The problem: The four-second tax of heavy note apps
The best ideas do not arrive while you are staring at a blank document. They arrive mid-task. You are deep in a terminal session, reviewing a complex design file, or in the middle of a fast-moving Zoom call, and a critical thought hits you.
Then comes the tax of writing it down.
You have to break your focus, find your note app in the Dock, wait for the heavy window to render, pick a folder, and click into a new page. That process takes about four seconds.
Four seconds of friction is all it takes to lose the thought before the cursor even arrives. You cannot fix that friction with a "better editor" or a fancier AI tagging system. You fix it by making the distance to the page shorter than the life of the thought.
The solution: A global hotkey and a violent lack of friction
Capture has to be faster than forgetting. Benchpad Quick Capture sits quietly in your Mac menu bar or your Windows system tray, waiting for a single keystroke. We didn't build an ecosystem; we built a very sharp, very fast knife.
One global hotkey drops a pad directly in front of whatever you are currently doing. You write the thought down, you press the key again, and you are instantly back where you were.
Three named pads, summoned in an instant and gone again
How it actually works
- One hotkey, from anywhere:
Cmd/Ctrl+Shift+Spacetoggles the panel system-wide. It appears instantly focused, with the caret already blinking. When you hide it, your previous app regains focus automatically. There is no window management and no lost place. - More than one capture verb: Separate hotkeys allow you to start a fresh entry, jump straight into global search, or instantly paste your clipboard into the pad without even seeing the UI. "Save this" is a single keystroke, not a multi-step workflow. All hotkeys are rebindable in Settings.
- Resident and quiet: The panel stays loaded in memory so re-summoning it is instant, and it hides itself on blur. On Mac, it's a menu bar accessory with absolutely no Dock icon clutter.
- The exact same offline-first pads: The system tray app is not a "second notebook". It is a window directly into your three Benchpad pads. It works with the network off, and merges conflict-free with edits from your other devices the moment the connection returns.
Mac menu bar, Windows system tray
One app, built for both desktops.
It lives in the top-right menu bar on macOS with no Dock clutter, and in the system tray on Windows. It uses the exact same hotkey on each. You can download the .dmg or the Windows installer below.
One thought, four front doors
The tray app is the desktop sibling of the Chrome side panel, the native iOS and Android apps, and the web app.
It is the exact same three pads behind all of them. You capture the thought from whichever front door is nearest to you.
Stop managing windows. Start writing.
Bind the hotkey once, and stop thinking about where your notes go. That is what Benchpad is for.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I open the Benchpad menu bar app?
Press the global hotkey — Cmd+Shift+Space on Mac, Ctrl+Shift+Space on Windows by default — from inside any application. The panel appears under the tray icon, focused and ready. Press it again to hide. You can also click the menu bar or tray icon. Every shortcut is rebindable in Settings.
Does it work on Windows too, or just Mac?
Both. On macOS it lives in the menu bar with no Dock icon; on Windows it lives in the system tray. Same app, same global hotkey, same offline-first pads. There's a .dmg for Mac and an installer for Windows.
Is the menu bar app a separate note app from the main one?
No — it's the same Benchpad. The panel shows your three pads with the same content and the same sync as your phone and the web app. Capture in the tray and it's everywhere moments later.
