A note app without AI

No summaries, no chat panel, no enhance button, no training on your notes. A deliberately AI-free note app, and why that's the feature.

A note app without AI

The problem: AI is a terrible co-writer for private thought

The entire software industry has decided that you cannot be trusted to write your own thoughts.

Every time you open a modern note app to jot down a grocery list, draft a difficult email, or map out a half-formed idea, a glowing button appears, offering to "summarize this," "expand this," or "change tone to professional." If you pause typing for three seconds, a predictive text ghost appears, trying to finish your sentence for you.

When you are doing unstructured, private thinking, AI is actively hostile.

Writing is the process of figuring out what you actually believe. The struggle to find the right word is not a bug; it is the cognitive mechanism that produces clarity. When an AI offers to do the writing for you, it is offering to do the thinking for you.

Furthermore, you shouldn't have to worry if the sensitive project notes you just pasted into a scratchpad are being sent to an external API to train a model. A private note app should be private.

The solution: A violently simple, human-only scratchpad

Benchpad is a scratchpad that respects the silence required for deep work. We didn't build an ecosystem. We built a very sharp, very fast knife. And we deliberately did not put AI in it.

There is no "Magic Wand" button. There is no auto-summarize feature. There is no chatbot asking how it can help you today. It is just your text, set in beautiful typography, on a fast, offline-first canvas.

What it means to have zero AI

  • No ghost text: When you stop typing, nothing happens. The cursor blinks. It waits for you.
  • No data harvesting: Your notes are not being used to train a language model. Benchpad operates on a local-first architecture. Every keystroke is saved directly to your device's local storage (IndexedDB) before it even attempts a background sync.
  • Visual silence: There is no glowing purple gradient in the corner of the screen trying to catch your eye. The interface is deliberately muted so your thoughts are the loudest thing on the screen.

The mechanics of focus

Instead of AI, Benchpad gives you robust, reliable tools for capturing and organizing human thought:

  • Instant capture: There is no "New Note" button. You open the app and the cursor is exactly where you left it.
  • Three fixed pads: There are no folders. You get exactly three scratchpads, and that number never grows. The constraint is the feature: because there is nowhere to file anything, there is absolutely nothing to decide.
  • Markdown natively: Headings, blockquotes, and lists are formatted instantly with standard markdown. You never have to take your hands off the keyboard.

Offline is a working condition

True focus requires absolute structural trust that your tool won't betray you when the router fails.

Benchpad does not need the internet to function. When you write on a plane with no Wi-Fi, the app doesn't complain or force you into a read-only mode. It just works.

When you eventually reconnect, Benchpad's CRDT engine quietly syncs your work in the background, merging edits perfectly without demanding your attention.

Stop managing your notes.

The next time you need to draft something, don't open an app that asks you what you want to name the file, or offers to write it for you. Just write.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Benchpad use AI?

No. There are no AI features in the product — no summaries, no chat, no autocomplete, no AI organization, and nothing that sends your notes to a model.

Are my notes used to train AI models?

No. Your notes train nothing, and they are encrypted at rest on the server. They exist to be read by exactly one intelligence: yours.

Will Benchpad add AI features later?

The product rule is that a feature has to reduce decisions, not add surface area. An AI layer fails that test, so there is no AI on the roadmap.
